Mr. Ben Zhou served as lead structural engineer for this student housing project. Project features two construction sites (female housing site and male housing site) each consisting of three apartments (63 Studios, 81 Single Bedrooms and 75 Two Bedrooms), two residence halls (300 single occupant units), one community center and a utility building. Total area for entire project: 759,000 ft2 .
Precast concrete (walls, slabs, beams, frames, bathroom pods) was extensively applied in structural design for speed of construction, green construction, reduction in cost and the amount of imported labor. Construction time was projected to be 6 months less than that using conventional cast-in-situ construction.
The architectural design features some unique elements such as the helical stairs and spiral walls on the roof for the Community Center which inspired intuitive structural solutions .
